Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: Matsukamesou is a charming and creative take on the capsule hotel concept. Staying in a tent might sound unusual, but it genuinely felt more private and spacious than your typical capsule setup. It’s a quirky adaptation that really works. The onsen was a major plus—clean, relaxing, and seemingly tattoo-friendly (though I can’t say for sure), which made the experience even better. The staff were also great: friendly, talkative, and welcoming throughout my stay.

Negative: While I’d absolutely use the tent facilities again, the futon itself wasn’t the most comfortable. I had to sleep on top of both the futon and the blanket just to get a decent rest—some thicker bedding would go a long way. Also, the urinal area could’ve used a bit of help; by evening, there was a noticeable smell. Some odour control or air fresheners would really improve the shared facilities.

Summary: A fun and thoughtful twist on capsule stays, with great staff and onsen—just bring a back-up blanket
